Three-Flowered Aven

Habitat: Dry grassy areas.

Description: Divides at the base into three lobes, the uppermost is the largest.  Has only a few opposet stem leaves.  3 pink-purple nodding flowers grow off of long stiles.

Size: 30-60cm tall.

Fun Facts:  The Blackfoot used to crush the seeds of Three-Flowered Avens to make perfume.

Amelanchier alnifolia
Shrub or small tree, forms dense thickets.  Branches are smooth, dark grey to reddish brown.  Leaves thin, oval shape with sharp teeth on the top half.  Has white, showy flowers.  Berry-like pomes (like miniature apples), purple to nearly black in color.  Juicy and sweet!
