Local Conservation Organizations

Friends of Fish Creek
The Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society was established in 1992 to assist in the protection, preservation and enhancement of the diverse natural and human heritage which lies within Fish Creek Provincial Park in Calgary, Alberta.

Bragg Creek Environmental Coalition (BCEC)
The BCEC is dedicated to environmental protection, raising public awareness, research and participation in cooperative initiatives on environmental issues in the Bragg Creek/Kananaskis area, as well as the rest of Alberta.

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
Located along the Bow River in Calgary, AB the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is a 32-hectare wildlife reserve with more than two kilometres of level walking trails throughout the riverine forest, and along the river and a peaceful lagoon. There are many opportunities for viewing a wide variety of bird and plant species as well as several kinds of mammals. They also offer a variety of educational programs.

Weaselhead Glenmore Park Preservation Society (WGPPS)
The Weaselhead Natural Environment Area is a unique and naturally beautiful urban park located in Calgary, Alberta. Locals are justifiably proud of this Area and work hard to conserve it. This website has an amazing amount of information from lists of Area wildlife species with photos to free ecotours and education programs for all ages. This is a site well worth checking out!


Provincial Conservation Organizations

Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA)
AWA is the oldest wilderness conservation group in Alberta. For 32 years they have been effectively defending wild Alberta through awareness and action.

Alberta Prairie Conservation Forum
The Prairie Conservation Forum is a large voluntary coalition of stakeholder groups whose members are interested in the conservation of native prairie and parkland environments in Alberta.

Alberta Conservation Association
Alberta Conservation Association is a charitable organization committed to the conservation and enhancement of Alberta's natural biological resources. Their core business is to contribute to sustainable management of Alberta's wildlife and fish populations, and the habitat upon which they depend.

Friends of Banff
The Friends of Banff National Park is a non-profit organization, committed to increasing awareness and appreciation of the natural and cultural heritage of Banff National Park.

Cows and Fish
Alberta's own riparian habitat management program. They work with communities and producers, and offer a variety of tools to assess riparian health and improve grazing management.


Canadian Conservation Organizations

Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative
The Y2Y Conservation Initiative promotes 'people working together to maintain and restore the unique natural heritage of the Yellowstone to Yukon region.'

Evergreen Canada Initiative
The Evergreen Canada Initiative brings nature to cities by creating greener, healthier schools, communities and homes through innovative community naturalization projects.

Canadian Wildlife Federation
The Canadian Wildlife Federation hosts an informative website that provides updates on what's happening with wildlife and wildlife habitat in Canada.

Canadian Nature Federation
The Canadian Nature Federation is a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting nature, its diversity and the processes that sustain it. They are affiliated with more than 100 naturalist groups across the country.

Ontario Nature
Ontario Nature protects and restores natural habitats through research, education and conservation, connecting thousands of individuals and communities with nature.

Canadian Parks & Wilderness Society (CPAWS)
CPAWS is Canada's grassroots voice for wilderness. They save wilderness by campaigning for new parks and taking the lead nationally to make sure governments put the needs of nature first in parks management.

Environment Canada
The Government of Canada's website for information on anything related to the environment - climate change, clean air, nature, clean water. This information is available through online newsletters, publications, related sites and so on.

Canadian Council on Ecological Areas (CCEA)
The CCEA is committed to establishing a comprehensive network of protected areas linked together that will protect Canada's terrestrial and aquatic diversity.

Wildlife Habitat Canada (WHC)WHC works through partnerships with communities, landowners, governments, non-government organizations and industry to find effective solutions to complex environmental problems facing wildlife habitat.


North American Conservation Organizations

The Wildlands Project
Wild Earth is a journal of wildlands recovery and protection in North America.



Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS)
The SWCS is an international, non-profit scientific and educational organization dedicated to promoting conservation of soil and water resources.

Earth Justice
When government agencies or private interests violate (or, in the case of the government, fail to enforce) environmental laws, Earthjustice attorneys, representing citizen groups, scientists, and others, go to court to see that the laws are obeyed and enforced.



Southern Alberta Land Trust Society (SALTS)

SALTS works to protect agricultural land from subdivision and promotes responsible land stewardship through: land conservation; cooperation with local communities, biologists, range managers and many others; succession and estate planning; and, awareness and education.

Nature Conservancy of Canada

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is a national organization dedicated to preserving natural habitat and biological integrity. It works to conserve natural areas of ecological significance, outstanding beauty and educational interest.

The Land Conservancy of British Columbia

The Land Conservancy of British Columbia is a member-based charity that works in partnership with government agencies and other conservation organizations to protect the special places of BC.

Environment Canada, Canadian Wildlife Service, Eco Gift Program

On this website Environment Canada provides a checklist of information on donating ecologically significant land in order to protect it for generations to come.

Calgary Field Naturalists
The Calgary Field Naturalists (CFNS) is a thriving, not-for-profit, non-political, natural history club that serves over 500 members in Calgary and the surrounding area. Members have a wide variety of interests including: birding, botany and many conservation, natural history and environmental topics. Check out their site and get involved!

Land Stewardship Resource Centre of Canada

This Alberta-based website is a comprehensive and interactive resource centre for anyone with questions, concerns or a general quest for information on conservation-related issues. This site takes the confusion out of tracking down the best available resources, conservation programs, practical tools and management techniques.

Stewardship Centre for B.C.

This website is similar to the Land Stewardship Resource Centre yet they also have online the extensive Stewardship Series - an information series that challenges the public to link human development and natural ecosystems to create healthier and more sustainable communities.

Wild About Gardening

Wild About Gardening is a project of the Canadian Wildlife Federation. This unique website has a wealth of information about gardening, creating or enhancing wildlife habitats as well as a variety of other tips.

Wildlife Habitat Canada (WHC)

WHC works through partnerships with communities, landowners, governments, non-government organizations and industry to find effective solutions to complex environmental problems facing wildlife habitat.

Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA)

For the past 60 years the PFRA has been working with prairie people to ensure the long-term sustainability of rural communities. They have regional offices and provide support on rural issues such as soil and water conservation.

Sonoran Institute

The Sonoran Institute is a community stewardship exchange program that provides information, contacts and examples of community-based strategies that conserve the ecological integrity of important natural systems while meeting the economic goals of the region.

Stewardship Canada

Stewardship Canada provides a simple entry into a virtual, growing community of information, knowledge, contacts and resources specifically related to stewardship.
