An Unforgettable Adventure
The Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area is excited to announce the return of Summer Day Camps this July and August. We plan to gradually reintroduce day camps at the ASCCA over the next few years, and in 2026 will be offering two weeks of camps for children ages 6-9, and 9-12. Camps will be led by ASCCA staff, volunteers and community guests for a one-of-a-kind week-long experience.
We firmly believe that experiences in nature from a young age build resilience, confidence, problem-solving skills and lead to a greater sense of empathy towards nature and all those who depend on it. Our theme for 2026 Cross Conservation Camp will be Exploring the Land, learning about our environment and the part we all play in protecting it. Learn more and register below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Please explore the below headings for frequently asked questions.
What is the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area?
The Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area is a 4800 acre day-use natural preserve located just southwest of Calgary off of Highway 22X. The area is land donated in 1987 by our founders Sandy and Ann Cross and was formerly a ranch, Rothney Farm. The area is a protected habitat conservation area under the Alberta Wildlife Act. Our mandate is to preserve habitat and provide environmental education to our community. Approximately 20 km of hiking trails are open to visitors year-round daily, from 4:00 am to 11:00 pm.
Is the ASCCA a provincial park?
The ASCCA is not a provincial park, and does not receive regular government funding to operate. We exist through an endowment fund and the generosity of individual and corporate donations. Revenue from parking and our education programs also supports the conservation and sustainability of the area. We are a registered charitable organization.
What are the ASCCA’s guidelines for visitors?
All visitors are asked to register at our welcome kiosk, and either display an annual parking pass or contribute $10/vehicle for daily parking. We do not allow any vehicles (including bikes), overnight camping, hunting, smoking, horse riding or dogs in the area. Visitors are asked to remain on designated trails, pack out all garbage and not disturb any plants or wildlife.
Are meals and snacks included in day camp registration?
Meals will not be provided by ASCCA. The ASCCA may provide light snacks to campers, but caregivers are responsible for packing campers with adequate nutrition for a day of camp activities. Please pack food that does not require re-heating and use reusable containers whereever possible to reduce waste. All campers should bring a reusable water bottle each day.
What should my child wear for day camp?
Weather can change at a moment’s notice, and Foothills weather may differ from a forecast in Calgary. Please ensure that your child is prepared for all weather, including rain and snow. We suggest light-weight clothes that cover the arms and legs, to prevent scrapes and injury and to reduce the risk of sunburn. We also ask for a change of clothes for each child in case clothes become wet or dirty. An additional pair of shoes that can be kept in our building are also recommended.
Can my child bring toys and games to day camp?
Free time will be set aside in the morning and afternoon for campers to play, indoors and outdoors. Safe toys include stuffed animals, balls and frisbees, card games and board games, and craft supplies including sketch pads, markers and crayons. Children are responsible for their own toys and personal belongings.
How does ASCCA respond to emergencies?
The ASCCA has an Emergency Response Plan. We also meet regularly with first responders and it is our policy to contact them first in the event of a life-threatening emergency. Once 911 has been called, parents and caregivers will be contacted as soon as possible. Read our ERP policy statement here https://www.crossconservation.org/resources/publications/
What are some common hazards at ASCCA?
Common hazards include steep, wet, and uneven terrain, sharp branches or prickly plants, biting or stinging insects, loose soil or mud, unpredictable hot or cold weather in all seasons. ASCCA will take measures to reduce the risk of injury, but participants assume risk. Caregivers should inform the ASCCA of any allergies or pre-existing health concerns that may impact their child’s safety.
What supervision will day camp participants receive?
At least two full-time staff will be present with children at all times. ASCCA volunteers will also assist with day camp activities. All ASCCA staff and volunteers undergo criminal background checks and are certified with up-to-date Intermediate First Aid.
Will transportation to and from ASCCA be provided to campers?
The ASCCA is unable to provide transportation to day camp participants. Caregivers must arrange drop off and pick up for the week. ASCCA staff will be given a list of trusted adults who many pick up campers prior to the start of day camps. To help accomodate schedules, free childcare will be offered from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm during each week of camp.
Where is the ASCCA located?
The Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area’s address is 20-194001 160 Street W, Foothills AB T1S 4K9.
